Matthews at 4? After a season? Playing against lesser competition? Rediculous. I mean, he may get there. That day isnt today.

It's the NHL Network.. they have Drai as a top 20 center and he played wing the majority of last year next to McDavid. That's how bad they are at life.

I'd say he should probably be higher... but... he's been so banged up the last few years, this may even be generous, to be honest.

I agree Matthews had an awesome first year, but like you said 1 year. No matter how good you are its hard to understand how a kid who played one full season is the 4th best centre in the NHL. He could end up being the second best behind Mcdavid, but not yet, not yet.

Nice to see Backstrom actually got some credit though. Seems to me he doesn't get enough credit for the capitals success. I have a feeling stammer is going to come out of the gates a little slower then everyone is anticipating because of his knee injury. Parise is well documented saying it took him 18 months to feel 100% again so it wouldnt surprise me if he under performs out of the gate. Just have to hope he can turn the page on this injury riddled past few years and get back to playing great hockey night in and night out.

The NHL is chomping at the bit to promote the young guys. Matthews and McDavid are indeed the future stars and storylines for years to come, but you can see its obvious the league is really pushing to promote the new rivalries and the fresh faces. Look at Rupp on NHL network talking about "the list" and he instantly went to Eichel. Matthews is ranked 4th after 1 season, and McDavid is already unseating Crosby and Malkin who just won back-to-back Cups. Crosby who won back-to-back Conn Smythes, and Malkin who lead the entire playoffs in points. Again, back-to-back Cup wins and all.

I get McDavid is an awesome player. No question there. Likewise that Matthews will be great for years to come. I give them both all the credit in the world. I don't have one negative thing to say about either of them. I'd be freaking thrilled if either of those guys were on my team. But I don't think the talking heads should be putting them at the top of the list just yet while Sid and Geno are still collecting Cups like pokemon.

All the folk's putting these list's together hail from Ontario. Most of the bloggers on this website compose their articles from Toronto. I love me some Austin Mathews but people really need to get used to the fact that he will be listed behind McDavid(begrudgingly) in every list made for the next 50 years. He could score 17 goals and put up 17 assists next year and there will be talk of Hart trophy.
